King Henry and Princess Anne are getting along OK for the moment, even though there was a big mix-up with her portrait.
King Henry and Princess Anne of Cleves meet for the first time.
“With due respect your majesty, you’re not as handsome as your portrait,” says Princess Anne, not afraid to speak her mind.
“MY portrait?” The King is dumbfounded. “I think there’s been a misunderstanding.”
King Henry of England was lonely and wanted a wife, but he had already rejected all the princesses in his kingdom because they weren’t pretty enough. So his counselors suggested he marry a princess who lived across the ocean in Germany.
“Not before I see her portrait,” declared the King. “If she’s pretty, I’ll marry her.”
He ordered Sir Hans, his court artist, to set sail for Germany and paint the princess’s portrait…
